Ravi (name changed), a 47-year-old shop owner from Faridabad, had been living with intermittent back discomfort and a dragging pain in his left flank for nearly three months. He had dismissed it as a muscular issue, possibly due to long hours of standing. However, when the pain became more persistent and started disturbing his sleep, he decided to consult the specialists at Artemis Hospitals, Gurgaon.

An ultrasound followed by a contrast-enhanced CT scan revealed a large renal cyst—over 10 cm in diameter—pressing against his kidney and surrounding structures. While simple kidney cysts are usually harmless, the size and location of this one warranted surgical removal. Ramesh was then shifted to the urology department and he was understandably anxious about the possibility of major surgery and prolonged recovery time.

After a detailed discussion with our urology team, Ramesh was relieved to learn that his condition could be treated with a laparoscopic cyst decortication—a minimally invasive procedure that avoids large incisions. He was admitted the day before surgery, and all necessary pre-operative evaluations were completed efficiently.

Using keyhole incisions and high-definition laparoscopic instruments, the surgical team carefully drained and excised the cyst wall without disturbing the healthy part of the kidney. The procedure was completed in under two hours, with minimal blood loss. Ramesh recovered well, and by the next morning, he was walking around his room. He was discharged on the third day, already feeling a significant improvement.

At his two-week follow-up, Ramesh reported no pain and had returned to managing his shop with ease. A repeat scan confirmed that the kidney was functioning normally, with no sign of residual cyst.

This case is a clear example of how advanced urological techniques like laparoscopy can successfully treat even large renal cysts, without the trauma of open surgery. At Artemis Hospitals, we are committed to offering modern, patient-friendly solutions that ensure both safety and rapid recovery.
