Paediatric Rheumatology
The study of rheumatic disorders in children and adolescents is the
focus of Pediatric Rheumatology, a subspecialty of Pediatrics. Rheumatological
diseases in children are caused by immune system dysregulation, which results
in an exaggerated immune response and hyperinflammation that attack the child's
own cells and organs, including the joints, eyes, skin, lungs, heart, gut, and
brain.
One should suspect
these diseases in children with-
·
Persistent joints swelling/pains/limpingfor more than a month-Juvenile
Idiopathic Arthritis.
·
Prolonged fever with or without rash/joint pains for more than
2weeks-Systemic Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis.
·
Prolonged fever (in months) with weight loss/photosensitive rash over
exposed parts of the body/oral ulcers/bodyache-Juvenile Systemic Lupus
Erythematosus.
·
Recurrent episodes of undiagnosed fever with rash/joints pain/abdominal
pain-Autoinflammatory Syndromes.
·
Prolonged muscle weakness (easily fatigued, inability to climb up
stairs/stand up from a sitting position or trouble sitting up from a laying
position) and rash over knuckles of hands/elbows and eyes-Juvenile Dermatomyositis.
·
Thickening and tightening of skin of any part of the body- Scleroderma
·
Recurrent redness of eyes/diminution of vision-due to underlying
Autoimmune Uveitis.
·
Bluish discoloration of fingers of hands and feet on exposure to
cold-Raynaud’s phenomenon
When compared to adult patients, most of these
illnesses respond very well to various medications and
have favourable prognoses.
