Mental Health Consultations: Women Prefer Teleconsultations, Men Favor In-Person Visits

The landscape of mental health consultations is evolving, with data revealing an interesting gender divide. As World Mental Health Day approaches, insights from industry players shed light on women's preference for teleconsultations and men's inclination towards in-person visits. Rahul Chandhok, Head Consultant of Mental Health and Behavioral Science at Artemis Hospital, Gurugram, offers valuable perspectives on this trend. This article delves into the data, the evolving mental health scenario, and how healthcare providers are adapting to meet the diverse needs of their patients.

The Gender Divide in Mental Health Consultations

Recent data indicates a distinct gender preference in the choice of mental health consultations. As the demand for mental health services surges, women have opted for teleconsultations, accounting for 55% of these appointments. In contrast, men have shown a strong inclination for in-person consultations, making up a significant 67% of the total. Rahul Chandhok, Head Consultant of Mental Health and Behavioral Science at Artemis Hospital, Gurugram, weighs in on these variations and highlights the evolving dynamics in the field.

The Surge in Telehealth Bookings

This year has witnessed a remarkable four-fold increase in telehealth bookings, with young adults aged 21 to 40 years constituting a substantial 73% of these appointments. The convenience and accessibility of teleconsultations have made them a preferred choice, especially among the younger demographic.

In-Person Consultations and Regional Insights

In contrast, data from Practo for FY23 shows a 29% year-on-year increase in in-person consultations. An analysis of the mental health landscape across various cities reveals significant contributions from different regions. Delhi leads the way, accounting for 35% of consultations, followed by Bengaluru at 19%, Mumbai at 11%, Hyderabad at 10%, and Chennai and Pune, each at 8%.

The Growing Mental Health Burden

India bears a substantial mental health burden, with 2,443 disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) per 100,000 population, as per the World Health Organization. This burden has grown notably since the onset of the pandemic, with the Indian Psychiatry Society reporting a 20% increase in mental illness cases.

Expert Perspective: Rahul Chandhok

Rahul Chandhok, Head Consultant of Mental Health and Behavioral Science at Artemis Hospital, Gurugram, offers valuable insights into the gender-based trends in mental health consultations. He notes that women's comfort with teleconsultations may be a contributing factor to this preference. He highlights how teleconsultations have played a pivotal role in battling the stigma surrounding mental health, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The evolving landscape of mental health consultations reflects the changing preferences and needs of patients. As World Mental Health Day approaches, understanding these trends and variations is crucial for healthcare providers. Whether through teleconsultations or in-person visits, the focus remains on providing accessible and effective mental health services to all.
